Fancy A Scandalous Staycation…?
“Come with me and you’ll be, in a world of pure imagination”
Considering nobody is crazy about reality right now, could Cliveden House be your escapism antidote?”
A recent Channel 4 Documentary described Cliveden House Hotel as a playground for aristocratic types or the deep pocketed, perhaps filled with new money. It has been the playground of Queens, Duchesses, American businessman and kicked off the tryst between Christine Keeler and John Profumo.
The shoulders of the celebrated frequently rub at Cliveden House, consequently, arriving in our past its best seven year old vehicle, dog yapping in the back….we were a tad relieved to be granted access….
The Suspension of Reality
Prior to the year 2020, the ability to suspend reality was really viewed as a negative trait. Yet in such a testing year, the opportunity to leave worldly troubles behind the strong walls of the Cliveden Hotel, is truly a gift.
The approach to the house is impressive. At the end of the aptly named Long Drive, stands the imposing building. Grand in every sense of the word, yet with just 46 bedrooms (operating with even less during the Covid 19 pandemic). Social distancing no problem.
Cliveden House is a destination hotel and although it is well located for Henley On Thames, Eton and Windsor, with 376 acres to explore, there truly is no reason to leave, so don’t!
Cliveden Fountain
Fur Coat and No Knickers…..
The estate boasts stunning formal gardens, a hillside amphitheatre and a beautiful monumental fountain, where local legend suggest a somewhat “spirited” lady crashed her car, wearing only a fur coat. Yes scandal is never far from Cliveden, so go create one of your own!!!
The British Countryside is littered with luxury country hotels, all trying to out glitter one another. Their facilities are often world class, but their eagerness to opt for creamy Cotwolds interiors can leave them feeling a little “samey”. Cliveden opted out.
The interior of Cliveden pays massive allegiance to the history of the house, never apologising for any fading grandeur, which only adds to the allure. Understatement escapes Cliveden, a theatrical reception, draped with richly coloured tapestries, Italianate verandas and a gilded clock tower, Cliveden fully commits to opulence.
Dining
Cliveden Restaurant
The Cliveden Restaurant
Whilst social distancing measures may be getting tedious, there are advantages. This is evident in the Cliveden Restaurant, where the removal of tables ensures everybody gets a front row seat to enjoy dinner overlooking the formal gardens. Fine dining in fine surroundings.
The Astor Grill
The hotel recognises that the pomp of fine dining every evening can feel excessive. So in contrast to the palatial Cliveden Restaurant, the Astor Grill is located in the former stable block, offering some easy going nose bags, equating to fish and fizz type fodder.
Cliveden Library Bar
Bars
In keeping with a country house with a history of debauchery, liquor is never far from the hand. A trendy trailer promotes house Champagne Veuve Clicquot, whilst the bar in the main hotel showcases an extensive selection of whiskey and books, which I am not entirely sure are a perfect blend.
Merrily, Merrily, Merrily
As previously mentioned, Cliveden House is positioned in extensive grounds and there is very little need to roam further afield. Hire a motor cruiser and explore the Thames, with picturesque views of the hotel. You may also spot Spring Cottage which is where Christine Keeler had been staying when she met Profumo.
Spa and Pools
Located under the clock tower, the Spa is a real asset to the hotel with fabulous treatments and a poolside bar, which is always welcome. Summer days can be spent lazing by the outdoor pool which has no pesky time restrictions for children.

Room Recommendation
Cliveden House is a history lesson in a hotel. And therefore you should select a room where you can almost feel the presence and power of the bygone elite.
Opt for the Mountbatten Suite, the former billiard room which has retained a private club like feel, complete with winged leather chairs and panelled walls.
